Reha Erdem, Turkish cinema’s one of its most significant independent directors. Employing an aesthetic and philosophical approach that transcends traditional narrative forms, Erdem explores themes such as the relationship between nature and humanity, the individual’s inner journey, gender, freedom and affiliation like.
He was born in Istanbul in 1960. He began his education at Boğaziçi University’s Department of Cinema and Television, then pursued film studies at France’s Paris VIII University. His interest in cinema was shaped during his time studying in France, where he deepened his engagement with cinematic aesthetics and narrative language on.
After returning to Türkiye, he launched his directing career with his first feature-length film, “A Ay” (1988). This work marked the beginning of a new style in Turkish cinema, employing an experimental narrative distinct from the conventional Yeşilçam melodramas film.
