Ovacık Church Mosque

Ovacık Kilise Camii is a religious structure located in the town of Ovacık, within the central district of Niğde Province, and documented by an inscription dated 1771. It was originally constructed as a Greek Orthodox church and later converted into a mosque through functional transformation.

The interior space of the church is organized into three naves. The building is planned with a central main apse and two smaller side apses on either flank. Additionally, a second floor is situated directly above the main apse. Although the function of this upper level is not specified, it has a direct impact on the internal spatial organization.

Today, access to the mosque is provided through a door on the side of the narthex. The arch openings within the narthex have been subsequently sealed with stone masonry. This intervention reduced the building’s internal-external relationship but formed part of its functional transformation.

When the church was converted into a mosque, the interior floor level was raised by approximately two meters. This elevation altered the spatial perception within the interior. Furthermore, the existing subfloor has been covered with wood, differing from the original material. The new flooring is positioned above the original surface and constitutes an intervention in the original fabric.

Originally, a bell tower was located at the southeast corner of the building. This tower was an architectural element reflecting the church’s original function. During its conversion into a mosque, a minaret was added to this tower.

The roof of Ovacık Kilise Camii is covered with clay tiles. In the courtyard area, new structures have been built to accommodate the mosque’s functions. These include a Quranic instruction building and the imam’s residence. Both structures were added in more recent times as supportive units in accordance with the building’s current use.
