Of is a district in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Trabzon, known for its historical and cultural richness. Of, with its deep-rooted history, natural beauty and unique cultural structure, has served as a home to various civilizations throughout history. Founded as a colony by Milesian sailors, Of became an important settlement and important trade center due to its strategic location. • Ancient Period: Of’s history extends back to the 7th century BCE. Founded as one of the colonies along the Black Sea coast by Milesian sailors, Of initially had an independent administration. Later, the region came under the influence of the Persian Empire and was incorporated into the boundaries of the Kingdom of Pontus in 312 BCE. After the fall of the Kingdom of Pontus, it came under the rule of the Roman and Byzantine Empires.
• Middle Ages: Of retained its importance during the Byzantine period and developed as a major trade center during the Empire of Trebizond (1204–1461). Its location along a branch of the Silk Road enhanced the region’s commercial vitality.
• Ottoman Period: In 1461, following Fatih Sultan Mehmet’s conquest of Trabzon, Of was incorporated into the territories of the Ottoman Empire. During the Ottoman period, Of was recorded as a district within the Lezistan Sanjak of Trabzon Vilayet and was notable for its agricultural production. According to 19th-century sources, Of was a significant settlement with a prominent role in agricultural output.
• Modern Period: The Sarıalioğlu family has held considerable influence over Of’s local administration for approximately 150 years. Throughout this period, the family has held key positions including mayoralty and other important offices, playing an active role in the district’s development and governance. This has become a distinctive feature of Of’s socio-political structure.

Of is located east of Trabzon on the Black Sea coast. The district has a mountainous terrain covered by lush vegetation. Influenced by the Black Sea climate, it experiences rainy and temperate weather throughout the year. This condition has endowed the region with rich natural beauty.

Of’s economy has historically been based on agriculture. Hazelnuts, tea, maize and various fruits are the region’s key agricultural products. In recent years, tourism has also become an important component of the district’s economy. Of attracts both domestic and international tourists through its natural beauty, historical structures and cultural events.

Of possesses a unique culture characterized by its own traditions, customs and lifestyle. In addition to sharing the general cultural traits of the Black Sea region, it features local music, folk dances and handicrafts. Hospitality is one of the defining characteristics of the local population.

Of offers diverse educational opportunities. According to data from the Milli Education Directorate, there are numerous schools in the district. These include primary schools, middle schools, high schools and vocational training institutions. As of 2023, Of has approximately 38 schools, 414 classrooms, 557 teachers and 7,250 students, demonstrating that educational services in the district are comprehensive and accessible.
