Arabic The term is derived from the root f-y-d (ف ي د), which conveys meanings such as "to benefit" or "to be in a state of abundance and increase," and is taken from the word mustafīd (مستفيد), meaning "one who benefits" or "one who gains advantage." The word is formed as the active participle of the tenth verb form (istif'āl) of the verb fāda (فَادَ), meaning "to benefit."

• Education and Academia: Used to describe students and researchers who gain insight from a teacher’s knowledge or experience or from the content of a scholarly publication. It refers to the recipient side in the process of knowledge transmission.
• Law and Economics: A technical term denoting individuals entitled to benefit from the rights and opportunities provided by a contract, endowment, insurance policy, or public service.
• Social and Cultural Relationships: Preferred for describing the spiritual and intellectual enrichment an individual derives from their environment, participation in social initiatives, or meaningful personal relationships.
