Muhammed Fatih Çalışır is a Turkish historian and academic. Çalışır, who conducts research in early modern Ottoman history and environmental history, serves as a faculty member at the Institute of Islamic Studies of Istanbul University. Throughout his academic career, he has carried out studies on Ottoman history, military history, and historiography, and has contributed to the literature through editorial and translation work.
He completed his undergraduate studies in 2005 at the Department of History, Fatih University. He earned his master’s degree from Bilkent University in 2009. He pursued his doctoral studies at the Department of History, Georgetown University, and received his PhD in 2016. Between 2024 and 2025, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University.
Çalışır worked at Ibn Haldun University from 2017 to 2019 and at the Department of History, Kırklareli University, from 2019 to 2023. Since 2023, he has been a faculty member at the Institute of Islamic Studies, Istanbul University, where he also serves as deputy director.
His research focuses on early modern Ottoman history and environmental history. He also conducts work on Ottoman institutions, military history, history of technology, and comparative history.
Çalışır’s academic output includes articles, book chapters, and editorial works. He has published extensively on the era of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, the Köprülü period, and the Ottoman military structure. He has also contributed to the translation of key works in environmental history and military history into Turkish.

İHÜ Summer School Programs (İHÜ)
Following the founding of Ibn Haldun University in 2017, Çalışır assumed the role of Summer School Coordinator and launched a program in Ottoman Turkish for doctoral students from leading institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, Georgetown, Brown, and Moscow State University. In subsequent years, the program was expanded to include courses in Modern Turkish, Arabic, and Persian, benefiting nearly a hundred international students.
In 2022, in collaboration with the Department of History at Penn State University, an Academic Summer School on Environmental History was organized. Enriched by seminars from leading scholars in the field including John R. McNeill, Suraiya Faroqhi and Halil Berktay, the program was held at the Süleymaniye Külliyesi.
Before his academic career, Çalışır worked at the Library of Manuscripts of Topkapı Palace, under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and at the Museum of the History of Islamic Science and Technology in Istanbul. He is among the founding members of the Turkish Environmental History Society and actively participates in scholarly organizations. During his tenure at Ibn Haldun University (2017–2019), he also served as Summer School Coordinator and managed both the academic and administrative dimensions of the university’s summer programs since its founding year.
His major publications include Kanuni Sultan Süleyman and His Era (2020), The Baburids: A Turkish Empire in India (2020), The Köprülü Period in Ottoman History (1656–1710) (2024), and History of Turkish Defense Industry from Antiquity to the Present (2024).
