Mersin Eyüp Aygar Science High School

Eyüp Aygar Fen Lisesi is a public secondary education institution under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye, located in the Yenişehir district of Mersin. Established in 1991, the school provides education in the sciences and holds the distinction of being Mersin’s first science high school.^【1】

The institution began its educational activities in 1991 under the name Mersin Fen Lisesi on Çiftçiler Street in the Gündoğdu neighborhood of the Akdeniz district. On 21 April 2011, following a protocol signed between the philanthropic businessman Eyüp Aygar and the Ministry of National Education, construction of a new building in the Yenişehir district was initiated. The completed campus commenced operations on 17 September 2012, at the start of the 2012–2013 academic year. Since that date, the institution has continued its educational activities under the name Eyüp Aygar Fen Lisesi in its current building.^【2】

Eyüp Aygar Fen Lisesi is a public school under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye. It operates within the administrative hierarchy of the Mersin Governorship and the Mersin Provincial Directorate of National Education, under the jurisdiction of the Yenişehir District Directorate of National Education. Its institutional vision is to become a leading institution that contributes to modern civilization through the production of knowledge and technology. Its mission is to prepare science-oriented students for higher education based on innovative and ethical principles.^【3】

The school operates on a full-day education model, with classes held between 08:10 and 15:20. The language of instruction is Turkish, and English is taught as the first foreign language. Technological infrastructure includes fiber-optic internet provided under the Fatih Project. Academic performance data indicate a 100% placement rate for the Transition to Higher Education Exam (TYT) and an 85% placement rate for the Undergraduate Placement Exam (AYT). Heating needs are met through air conditioning units in the main school building and through natural gas and air conditioning in the dormitory building.^【4】

Student admissions are conducted centrally through the Secondary Education Transition System (LGS) based on exam scores. The school ranks among the highest-scoring institutions in Mersin for LGS admissions. For the 2023–2024 academic year, the annual student quota was set at 120, with a minimum admission score of 486.1814.^【5】

The school campus is situated on a 13,490 m² area in the Limonluk neighborhood of Yenişehir district, Mersin. Facilities include 17 classrooms, one conference hall, one meeting hall, one chemistry laboratory, two biology laboratories, one physics laboratory, and two information technology (IT) classrooms. The campus also houses a robotics room, a library with 3,800 books, a games room, a cafeteria, and a clinic. To accommodate student housing needs, the Fatma Aygar Student Dormitory, with a capacity of 200 students and separate sections for female and male students, operates within the campus.^【6】

The administrative staff consists of a principal and deputy principals; the current principal is Ahmet Omaç. The academic staff comprises 37 teachers. Various units, including strategic planning and web teams, actively manage administrative and technical operations within the school.^【7】

The total number of students enrolled at the institution is 515. A dress code is enforced to maintain discipline and order; as of 6 December 2024, the use of the official school uniform became mandatory. According to established standards, students wear black polo or crew-neck T-shirts during winter and white polo or crew-neck T-shirts with black linen or fabric trousers during summer. Current students retain the right to continue wearing their old school uniforms bearing the school logo until graduation.^【8】

Sports activities include tennis, chess, basketball, volleyball, football, and korfbol. Notable sporting achievements include first place in the provincial korfbol competition and regional rankings in athletics for high jump and 100-meter events. Social and cultural activities are organized through composition contests, social responsibility projects, and various student clubs.^【9】

The institution participates in international programs such as Erasmus+, eTwinning, and field visits to CERN. Scientific projects include active participation in TÜBİTAK research programs 2204-A, 2204-C, and 2204-D, as well as initiatives related to Teknofest, MEB Robot, Deneyap, and patent development. In the 2022–2023 period, the school achieved first place in Turkey in the Teknofest Technology for Humanity Competition and third place in the TÜBİTAK Polar Research Project Competition.^【10】
