Mavigöl Waterfall

Mavigöl is a natural lake system located within the boundaries of the Dereli district in Giresun province, in Türkiye’s Black Sea Region. It is distinguished by its saline composition and turquoise coloration. The waterfall is situated on the Göksu Stream, and the area is home to the Black Sea’s only saline stream. Mavigöl consists of four distinct lakes and is surrounded by rocky terrain, with the local geology enabling the formation of travertine deposits.

The Mavigöl Waterfall and the surrounding lakes take on a turquoise hue from June to December due to snowmelt. This color change results from the saline nature of the water and the influence of limestone deposits. The travertine formations in the area are closely linked to the local geological structure.

Mavigöl and its surroundings provide habitat for various plant and animal species as part of the natural ecosystem. The area is protected under the Nature Conservation and National Parks framework, and efforts are ongoing to preserve its ecological balance.

Mavigöl attracts both domestic and international tourists due to its natural turquoise color and surrounding landscape. The area has been adapted for visitor access through improvements implemented by the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks. It can accommodate an average of 5,000 visitors daily, with visitor numbers increasing significantly during holidays and festive periods.

Conservation and development initiatives are carried out in the Mavigöl area by units of the Nature Conservation and National Parks organization. As part of these efforts, the region has been opened to visitors and environmental improvements have been implemented. The aim of these interventions is to preserve the natural structure while ensuring sustainable tourism management.
