Mauro Emanuel Icardi Rivero (born 19 February 1993; Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a striker. Throughout his career, he has worn the jerseys of Europe’s leading clubs including U.C. Sampdoria, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Galatasaray. He has achieved numerous accolades such as winning the Serie A top scorer title in Italy, the Ligue 1 championship in France, and the Süper Lig title in Türkiye, and has also represented the Argentina national football team.
Mauro Icardi was born on 19 February 1993 in the Estación Sarate neighborhood of Rosario, Argentina. His father, Juan Carlos Icardi, ran a butcher shop in Rosario, while his mother is Analía Rivero. His father’s previous marriage produced three step-siblings: Juan Jesús, Aldana, and Franco. After Mauro’s birth, the family had two more children, Ivana and Guido.
Due to the 2001 economic crisis in Argentina and worsening working conditions, the family migrated to Spain and settled in the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria). In Spain, his father worked in a restaurant and food delivery services, while his mother served as a laundry manager in a hotel. The family’s separation in 2011 marked a difficult emotional period in Icardi’s life.
Mauro Icardi began his football journey at the age of five with Club Infantil Sarratea, a small club in northern Rosario (F.C. Sarretta). It is said that his father encouraged him to play football by promising him a sausage sandwich and soda after each match. During his first season at Sarratea, he scored 51 goals, 108 in his second season, and 99 in his third, displaying extraordinary goal-scoring ability. Due to his slender and long legs, he was nicknamed “Cañito” during this period.
After moving to Spain, he joined the youth academy of U.D. Vecindario in Gran Canaria in 2002. Over approximately six to seven years there, he scored over 384 goals. In the Alevín and Benjamín (8v8 football) categories, he scored more than 100 goals per season; after transitioning to 11v11 football, his annual tally settled around 50 goals. He demonstrated his individual talent at an early age by scoring seven goals alone in a final match against U.D. Las Palmas, securing the championship for his team.
In 2008, at age 15, Icardi attracted attention with his performance at a youth tournament in Arona. Numerous clubs including Real Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, Deportivo, Espanyol, Arsenal, and Liverpool made transfer attempts. However, he chose Barcelona and joined the club’s world-renowned youth academy, La Masia.
Over two seasons playing for Barcelona’s U-17 and U-19 teams (Cadete and Juvenil), he scored approximately 40 goals. During this time, Lionel Messi, also born in Rosario, was already part of the senior team. Icardi stood out in the academy due to his traditional penalty-box striker profile, aerial dominance, and physical strength against defenders. However, Pep Guardiola’s tactical philosophy at Barcelona, centered on the “false nine” role and constant movement, did not suit Icardi’s static goal-scoring characteristics.
Due to the mismatch between his playing style and the club’s tactical expectations, Icardi was loaned to Italy’s U.C. Sampdoria in January 2011. After scoring 13 goals in 19 matches for Sampdoria’s youth team (Primavera), the Italian club purchased his registration rights in July 2011 for €400,000, making the move permanent.
Mauro Icardi’s professional career began with Italy’s U.C. Sampdoria. In January 2011, he joined the club’s youth team, Primavera, where he scored 13 goals in 19 matches, drawing significant attention. Following this performance, Sampdoria completed his permanent transfer in July 2011 by paying a €400,000 registration fee. He made his professional debut in Serie B against Juve Stabia and scored his first professional goal just ten minutes after coming on. After the team’s promotion to Serie A, he played 33 matches in the 2012–2013 season, scoring 11 goals in the top flight.

Icardi, Inter Milan dönemi (AA)
Following his successful stint at Sampdoria, Icardi transferred to Italy’s historic club Inter Milan in July 2013 for a €13 million fee. At Inter, he played alongside Argentine legends such as Diego Milito, Esteban Cambiasso, and Javier Zanetti. His performances earned him recognition as one of Europe’s most prolific strikers; he won the Serie A top scorer title twice, scoring 22 goals in the 2014–2015 season and 29 in the 2017–2018 season. He was also named Footballer of the Year in Italy in 2018.
Due to his leadership qualities and on-field presence, he was appointed team captain in 2015 at just 22 years old. Over six consecutive seasons with the Milan club, he appeared in 219 official matches, scoring 124 goals and providing 29 assists. With these statistics, he became the eighth highest goalscorer in the club’s history.

Icardi, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) dönemi (AA)
After concluding his career in Italy, Icardi joined France’s Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a one-year loan in September 2019. In his first season in France, he scored 20 goals and played a key role in helping the team win the Ligue 1 title. After the loan expired, PSG completed his permanent transfer in 2020 by paying a €50 million registration fee.
During his time in France, he won two Ligue 1 titles (2019–20, 2021–22), two Coupe de France trophies, one Coupe de la Ligue, and two Trophée des Champions, collecting all domestic honors available in the country. The Argentine striker made 92 appearances for PSG, scoring 38 goals and providing 10 assists. In later years, increased competition in the attacking line with stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, and Lionel Messi reduced his playing opportunities, leading him to decide to leave the club.

Icardi, Galatasaray dönemi (AA)
On 2 September 2022, Mauro Icardi joined Turkish Süper Lig side Galatasaray on loan from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). His absence from head coach Christophe Galtier’s plans, due to the presence of players like Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar, accelerated this loan move. During the loan period, approximately 38% of Icardi’s salary was covered by Galatasaray, while PSG paid the remaining €6 million.
He made his official debut for the yellow-red team on 16 September 2022 in the 7th week of the Süper Lig against Konyaspor, coming on in the 62nd minute to replace Bafétimbi Gomis. Although he did not score, he forced opposing defender Francisco Calvo to score an own goal, contributing to the team’s 2–1 victory. He scored his first goal on 23 October 2022 against Alanyaspor. In his first season with Galatasaray (2022–2023), he produced 22 goals and 7 assists in 24 league matches and scored 1 goal in 2 Turkish Cup appearances. He scored in every match against major rivals Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, and Trabzonspor and became the first player in Süper Lig history to score in seven consecutive matches for Galatasaray. He was a key figure in helping the team win the Süper Lig title at the end of the season.

Icardi, Galatasaray dönemi (AA)
After the loan agreement ended, during the summer 2023 transfer window, Galatasaray completed his permanent transfer by paying a €10 million registration fee. In the 2023–2024 season, he scored 25 goals in 34 league matches to become the Süper Lig top scorer and led the team to their second consecutive championship. He also delivered an effective performance in European competitions, scoring crucial goals against Olimpija and Molde in the Champions League qualifiers and against Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the group stage. In total, he scored 32 goals in 47 official appearances, marking one of the most productive seasons of his career.
Icardi’s third season at Galatasaray, 2024–2025, was interrupted by a serious injury. On 7 November 2024, during a UEFA Europa League match against English side Tottenham, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage. As a result, he was sidelined for 281 days and missed most of the season. Before the injury, he scored 6 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions.
After a long rehabilitation process, he returned to the pitch at the start of the 2025–2026 season in a match against Fatih Karagümrük. In his final season at Galatasaray, he appeared in 47 official matches—31 in the Süper Lig and 10 in the UEFA Champions League—and scored 16 goals. Upon the expiration of his contract, he bid farewell to the club on 16 July 2026 through an official message published by Galatasaray.

Icardi, Galatasaray dönemi (AA)
During his four seasons at Galatasaray, Mauro Icardi made 134 official appearances and scored 77 goals. With this record, he surpassed club legend Gheorghe Hagi’s 72-goal mark to become Galatasaray’s all-time top-scoring foreign player across all competitions. In Süper Lig alone, his 65 goals in 96 matches broke Hagi’s previous league record of 59 goals. He also became the player with the most goals scored at the RAMS Park stadium, netting 47 goals there. The Argentine striker stood out in derby matches, scoring 3 goals in 8 matches against Fenerbahçe, 5 goals in 7 matches against Beşiktaş, and 4 goals in 6 matches against Trabzonspor, totaling 12 goals in 21 major fixtures.
Icardi’s relationship with Galatasaray fans transcended on-field success and became a cultural phenomenon. Turkish singer Simge Sağın’s song “Aşkın Olayım” became associated with his goals and was played in the stadium after each of his strikes, officially becoming the club’s goal anthem. Fan admiration manifested in social behaviors such as dyeing their hair yellow like his and children imitating his goal celebrations. During his early years at the club, he wore the number 99 jersey before later adopting the iconic number 9.
Despite his high goal-scoring rate at club level, Mauro Icardi’s career with the Argentina national team (Albiceleste) remained limited. He made his first official appearance for the national team in October 2013 but was not called up again for a long period. After a nearly four-year absence, he was recalled in May 2017. In his total of 8 appearances for the national team, he managed only 1 goal.

Icardi, Arjantin dönemi (AA)
It has been alleged that Icardi’s inability to secure a regular spot in the national team stemmed from controversies in his personal life. Allegations in the media claimed that Lionel Messi, Argentina’s most important figure and a close friend of former teammate Maxi López, opposed Icardi’s inclusion in the squad due to personal conflicts involving López and Icardi’s then-wife Wanda Nara. This situation resulted in his exclusion from major tournaments such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup, even during periods of strong club form. Although he held Italian citizenship, he rejected offers from the Italian national team and chose to represent Argentina.
Mauro Icardi’s personal life has been a focal point of media and tabloid attention for much of his professional career. In the early stages of his career, his relationship with Wanda Nara, the wife of his Sampdoria teammate and close friend Maxi López, caused a major international scandal. After Nara separated from López, Icardi and Nara officially married in 2014. They have two daughters together, Francesca and Isabella.
Icardi and Wanda Nara’s marriage remained in the public eye for years due to allegations of infidelity, separations, and social media disputes. Their relationship took a new turn in July 2024 when Nara filed for divorce, and in March 2025, a Milan court officially dissolved their marriage. During the divorce proceedings, Icardi filed a lawsuit accusing Nara of child abduction after she took their children to Argentina without his consent. The court ruled that the children should return to Türkiye to be with their father. In June 2026, a temporary agreement was reached allowing the children to spend specific periods of the year with their mother in Argentina.【1】
Following his separation from Wanda Nara, Icardi began a relationship with Argentine singer and actress China Suárez (María Eugenia Suárez). The two initially connected on Instagram in 2021, which contributed to the crisis in his marriage to Nara (widely reported in the media as “WandaGate”), leading Icardi and Suárez to avoid each other for three years. However, after his divorce, they reunited in Buenos Aires at the end of 2024 and officially began dating on 29 November 2024. In the following period, China Suárez moved to Türkiye to live with Icardi.【2】
Mauro Icardi is described in football terminology as a traditional penalty-box striker (target man). He stands out not for his involvement in build-up play or playmaking, but for his static positioning within the penalty area and clinical finishing. His intelligent off-the-ball movement, high concentration, and ability to find optimal positioning have set a global standard for “one-touch” goals. The striker is equally effective with both feet, scoring approximately 60% of his goals with his right foot and 40% with his left.
His superior aerial dominance and physical strength in duels with defenders make him difficult to mark inside the penalty area. He is frequently compared to classic Argentine strikers like Gabriel Batistuta due to his physical build and football intelligence.
As of July 2026, Mauro Icardi’s professional career concluded with 501 official club appearances, 276 goals, and 67 assists. His club-level statistics are as follows:
