Martyr Özcan Kan Science High School

Şehit Özcan Kan Fen Lisesi is a secondary education institution located in the district of İzmit, Kocaeli province, aiming to develop qualified human resources in the basic sciences. The institution conducts its educational activities in the Ayazma Neighborhood, within the Gündoğdu Bayındırlık Permanent Housing area.^【1】

Historical data indicate that the institution began admitting students through the centralized examination system in 2015. During this period, the school has continued its development through academic achievements as well as rankings in local and national competitions.^【2】

Şehit Özcan Kan Fen Lisesi is a public educational institution under the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye. Its core mission is to provide the academic infrastructure necessary to train scientists required by the country, in alignment with the general objectives of Turkish National Education.^【3】

Instruction hours at the institution are scheduled between 09:00 and 16:10. The educational program is supported by a fiber-optic internet infrastructure provided under the Fatih Project. The school’s first foreign language is English.

Student admissions are based on centralized examination scores, with an annual student quota set at 150. The institution’s minimum admission scores over the years have been recorded as follows: 468.507 in 2015, 484.814 in 2017, 462.266 in 2019, and 420.155 in 2021.

The school campus is located in the Ayazma Neighborhood of İzmit district, with heating needs met by a central natural gas system. The dormitory building on campus includes triple-occupancy rooms, individual study desks for each room, study halls, a TV lounge, a dining hall, and a cafeteria. Students in the dormitory are provided with 24/7 hot water and internet access.^【4】

Institutional administration is carried out in accordance with regulations issued by the Ministry of National Education. To support students’ academic development and ensure their safety, resident teachers are assigned to the dormitory services.^【5】

The institution has a student profile characterized by high academic achievement. Statistics show that 78 percent of graduates gain admission to higher education institutions. In addition to academic pursuits, students actively participate in intellectual games and various sports disciplines.^【6】

To promote social development, the school organizes indoor sports, folk dances, and knowledge competitions. In terms of sports achievements, the school won basketball championships between 2017 and 2020, and provincial chess championships in 2019 and 2020. Additionally, science fairs are regularly organized each year.^【7】

Within the scope of scientific activities, the school collaborates with TÜBİTAK on joint projects and intellectual games competitions; in 2021, the school achieved second place nationally in this context. On the international level, Erasmus+ projects of the European Union are being developed and implemented.^【8】
