Lesley Chimuanya Ugochukwu (d. 26 March 2004, Rennes, France) is a Nigerian-French professional footballer who can play as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, or offensive midfielder. Standing at 1.90 metres tall, he is right-footed. He has represented France at the U21 international level and has played for the clubs Stade Rennais FC, Chelsea FC, Southampton FC, and Burnley FC during his club career.
Ugochukwu’s parents migrated from Nigeria to France before his birth. Part of his family and relatives continue to live in Imo State, Nigeria. His family includes individuals with professional sports backgrounds; his brother Chibuike Ugochukwu played for the Stade Rennais FC B team. His uncle Onyekachi Apam is a former professional footballer who represented the Nigeria national team (Super Eagles) in four major international tournaments and later served as a manager in the youth academy of OGC Nice. Ugochukwu was introduced to football culture at an early age through his father’s guidance and shaped his career by drawing on his uncle’s professional experience.
He began his football education at local clubs in France. Between 2010 and 2011 he trained with ASPTT Rennes, and between 2011 and 2012 with CPB Nord Ouest Foot. In 2012, at the age of nine, he joined the Stade Rennais FC (Rennes) academy in the U-9 category. He completed his development process within this club, including his academic education.
He signed his first professional contract with Stade Rennais FC, the club where he was developed, at the age of 16 in July. He made his first official appearance for the senior team shortly after turning 17. At the time, the club operated on a principle of giving young talents opportunities at the senior level.
After his career at Stade Rennais, Ugochukwu transferred to the English club Chelsea FC, signing a seven-year contract. It is noted that Chelsea held special significance for him as it was the club of his childhood idols John Mikel Obi and Claude Makelele. During his time at the club, he had the opportunity to meet Makelele in person.
Following his first year at Chelsea, Ugochukwu was loaned to Southampton FC of the Premier League for the 2024–2025 season. In that season, Southampton had just been promoted to the league after defeating Leeds United in the playoff final. Ugochukwu and his team initially faced difficulties, but as the season progressed he became a permanent fixture in the starting eleven as a defensive midfielder. He made 31 appearances for Southampton, 23 as a starter and 8 as a substitute, scoring one goal. At the end of the season, his team was unable to avoid relegation.
Following Southampton’s relegation and Chelsea’s permission for a permanent transfer, Ugochukwu moved to Burnley FC of the English Championship. He joined the club on 6 August 2025 and signed a contract valid until 30 June 2030. During his season with Burnley, he made 38 official appearances and contributed three goals to the team.
As of July 2026, the Turkish Süper Lig club Galatasaray reached a preliminary agreement with Ugochukwu and his representatives as part of their squad restructuring for the new season. He arrived at Istanbul Atatürk Airport General Aviation Terminal on 13 July 2026 to sign the contract and undergo medical examinations. He was greeted at the airport by club board member Abdullah Kavukcu and fans. In his first statement to the press upon arriving in Istanbul, he said: “As a child I dreamed of playing for big clubs. Now I have come to a great club like Galatasaray. I am very happy and proud.”
The player holds dual citizenship of France and Nigeria and is eligible to represent either country internationally. He has played for the France U21 national team, making 12 appearances without scoring a goal.
Simultaneously, in 2020 he came to the attention of then Nigeria national team head coach Gernot Rohr. Based on positive reports from his scouting team, Rohr identified Ugochukwu as a long-term successor to Wilfred Ndidi and moved quickly to integrate him into the Nigeria senior national team before France could make its own approach.
Ugochukwu’s primary position is defensive midfielder (offensive libero). He possesses a physically demanding, confident, and tactically disciplined playing style. His style has been shaped by the calmness and self-assured ball control of Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi, as well as his aggressive and powerful defensive work off the ball. He also maintains professional focus through guidance from his uncle Onyekachi Apam regarding career management and on-field discipline. As of 3 June 2026, his current market value is estimated at €22 million. His agent rights are managed by the agency “THE TEAM”.
