Köstem Olive Oil Museum

Köstem Olive Oil Museum was established in November 2017 in Uzunkuyu Village, within the Urla district of İzmir. The museum was realized by the Köstem Culture Education and Museum Foundation. Its proximity to the center of Urla makes it easily accessible to visitors.

The museum holds the distinction of being Türkiye’s second industrial museum. It was established to document the historical development of olive oil production processes, promote olive culture, and provide educational opportunities for children. It also contributes to the development of artistic awareness, manual skills, and historical consciousness.

The museum is built on a total area of 20,000 square meters, of which 5,650 square meters comprise the enclosed museum complex. Its design reflects modern and contemporary architectural principles and attracts attention through its aesthetic and functional layout.

The museum’s collection includes tools and systems used in olive oil production from ancient times to the present day. A precise replica of a 2,600-year-old olive oil mill from the ancient city of Klazomenai is among the key exhibits. Original and functional replicas of Ottoman-era stone presses and late 19th-century factory machinery are displayed for visitors. Additionally, the museum complex includes the Soap Hygiene and Cleaning Museum, a modern olive oil production facility, and workshops for wood and ceramics.

Guided tours are offered with expert guides, and an audio guide system provides informational support. Dedicated agricultural education gardens, skill development areas, and play zones are designed for children. The garden follows an arboretum approach and displays over 500 different tree species.

Köstem Olive Oil Museum is an important stop on cultural routes centered on olive oil. It integrates gastronomy, agriculture, ecology, and technology through a holistic approach. It supports sustainable rural development and contributes to regional tourism through its integration with the Köstem Hotel in Alaçatı.

Practical workshops, handicraft events, and thematic educational programs are organized within the museum. An eight-room boutique guesthouse opened in 2022 offers visitors an experience of rural life. Guests can enjoy breakfast prepared with organic products and nature-based activities.
