Köse (District)
Köse is a charming district located in the southern part of Gümüşhane, nestled among high mountains and a green valley. Have you ever heard of a place named after an old folk hero or a local bey? Köse derives its name from Köse Mahmut Ağa, who settled in this land.
Where Is Köse and What Kind of Place Is It?
Köse is situated to the south of Gümüşhane and is surrounded by the districts of Bayburt and Kelkit. It is built on a plateau at an elevation of 1,553 meters above sea level. Due to this altitude, the climate is distinct: winters are long and covered in pure white snow, while summers are dry and sunny. The Köse Creek flows through the area, bringing life to the region. The flatlands and fertile soils along the creek constitute the district’s most important asset.

How Do People Live in Köse?
The residents primarily earn their livelihood through agriculture and animal husbandry. If you visit Köse, you will see numerous large livestock and expansive fields. Additionally, the district hosts a large chicken farm that meets the region’s egg demand, as well as a factory that produces animal feed. The people here are closely knit, sharing both their joys and sorrows. Although there are no cinemas or theaters in the district, in recent years, the arrival of university graduates has led to the opening of lively cafes.
