Istanbul Camcı Çeşmesi

Camcı Çeşmesi is a historical Ottoman fountain located in the Balat neighborhood of the Fatih district inİstanbul. The structure is situated on Camcı Çeşmesi Yokuşu, directly opposite theCafer Subaşı Camii. This cultural heritage site, registered in the Istanbul Cultural Inventory under number 56781, is currently accessible to the public.^【1】

There is no written record specifying the exact date of construction or the founder of the fountain. No inscription on the structure provides information regarding its origin or dating. Although the precise date remains unknown, the fountain is classified as an Ottoman-era structure based on its architectural features.^【2】

Camcı Çeşmesi exhibits characteristics of classical Ottoman architecture. It follows a single-faced fountain typology, with a pointed arch used on its facade. The body of the fountain is constructed using a cut-stone masonry system, and its mirror stone is made of marble.^【3】

The structure, which had suffered physical damage, was restored under a project carried out by the Fatih Municipality Directorate of Cultural Heritage. The restoration work was completed on 17 June 2023. The interventions, conducted while preserving the architectural features of the classical period, included the following:

• The marble mirror stone was reconstructed in accordance with the original.
• Damaged sections were repaired using original materials.
• General cleaning of the fountain surface was performed.
• The elevation of the structure was adjusted to restore its proper relationship with the ground level.^【4】

Following these interventions, Camcı Çeşmesi continues to exist in the public realm with its original details intact.
