Historical Structures of Mardin

Mardin is located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region and has served as a home to numerous civilizations throughout history. The city’s architecture consists of structures from the Artuklid, Seljuk, Akkoyunlu, Ottoman, and Republican periods. The architectural fabric is particularly distinguished by the extensive use of cut stone.

Among the important religious structures in Mardin is the Ulu Mosque, built in the 12th century. This structure, dating from the Artuklid period, was constructed using cut stone. The Zinciriye Madrasa was commissioned in the 14th century by Melik Necmeddin Mahmut. The madrasa features a two-story building with a courtyard layout. The Kasımiye Madrasa was built during the Akkoyunlu period, with construction beginning in the 15th century. The Şehidiye Madrasa was constructed in the 13th century by the Artuklids.

Mardin also contains structures associated with different religious communities.
