Guardians of the Galaxy (Film)

Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2014 American film in the adventure, action, and science fiction genres^【1】. Directed by James Gunn, the screenplay was written by Gunn and Nicole Perlman, adapted from the Marvel comic book of the same name by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. The film centers on Peter Quill, a rogue adventurer who, after stealing a mysterious orb that threatens the universe, joins forces with a group of unlikely criminals to determine the fate of the galaxy.

The film’s story begins on Earth in 1988. Young Peter Quill is abducted from Earth by a group of space pirates known as the Ravagers, led by Yondu Udonta, shortly after the death of his mother, Meredith Quill, from illness^【2】. Twenty-six years later, Quill, now calling himself Star-Lord, steals a mysterious orb from the abandoned planet Morag. However, the orb is also sought by Ronan the Accuser, a fanatical Kree warrior determined to destroy planets. Although Quill is ambushed by Korath, one of Ronan’s lieutenants, he manages to escape. In response, Yondu places a bounty on Quill’s head, while Ronan tasks his adopted daughter Gamora with retrieving the orb.

On the planet Xandar, capital of the Nova Empire, Gamora attacks Quill to steal the orb. At the same time, Rocket, a genetically modified armed raccoon seeking the bounty on Quill’s head, and his tree-like companion Groot join the conflict. The quartet is captured by the Nova Corps and imprisoned in the high-security facility known as Kyln. There, they encounter Drax the Destroyer, whose family was murdered by Ronan and who is consumed by a desire for revenge. Drax wants to kill Gamora, but Quill convinces him to stop, explaining that Gamora is a key to reaching Ronan. Gamora reveals she has betrayed Ronan and found another buyer for the orb. The five form an alliance to escape the prison and travel to Knowhere, a remote space station located inside the severed head of a colossal celestial being.

At Knowhere, the group meets Taneleer Tivan, known as The Collector. When Tivan opens the orb, he reveals it contains an Infinity Stone—a power capable of altering the fabric of the universe. Tivan’s assistant accidentally triggers a massive explosion upon touching the stone. In the chaos, Drax, overcome by his thirst for vengeance, summons Ronan to Knowhere. Ronan easily defeats Drax and, with the help of his sister Nebula—who destroys Gamora’s ship—seizes the Infinity Stone. Quill, risking his life to save Gamora who is dying in the vacuum of space, surrenders to Yondu and convinces him to help retrieve the stone from Ronan in exchange for a large reward.

Realizing the true power of the orb, Ronan breaks his allegiance to Thanos, embeds the Stone into his war hammer, and sets course for Xandar aboard the massive warship Dark Aster to destroy the planet. Guardians of the Galaxy, alongside the Ravagers and the Nova Corps, engage in a fierce battle within Xandar’s atmosphere. After the Dark Aster crashes into Xandar’s surface, Groot sacrifices his life by forming a shield with his body to save his teammates. Emerging from the ruins, Ronan prepares to annihilate the planet, but Quill distracts him by dancing; meanwhile, Drax and Rocket destroy Ronan’s hammer. Quill catches the now inert Infinity Stone, and with Gamora, Drax, and Rocket clinging to him, they collectively channel and neutralize the Stone’s lethal energy, destroying Ronan.

After the battle, Quill deceives Yondu by giving him a fake stone and delivers the real one to the Nova Corps for safekeeping. The Guardians’ criminal records are erased, and it is revealed that Quill carries the genetic legacy of an ancient alien species through his father. In the film’s final scene, Quill listens to a cassette of his mother’s favorite songs, while the team, now accompanied by a newly sprouted Baby Groot, sets off in their rebuilt ship, the Milano, toward new adventures in space.

Produced by Disney and Marvel Studios, the film was directed by James Gunn. With a budget of approximately $170 million, principal photography took place at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England. The cinematography was handled by Ben Davis, and the editing was done by Hughes Winborne, Fred Raskin, and Craig Wood. The film was shot in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio and released in theaters in 3D with advanced audio formats including Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, SDDS, and Datasat.

The film premiered simultaneously worldwide on August 1, 2014, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye. Distributed in Türkiye by UIP Türkiye, the film earned ₺918,732 from 70,429 viewers during its opening weekend and reached a total of 346,390 viewers and ₺4,142,744 in gross revenue over its nine-week theatrical run^【3】.

In the United States and Canada, the film earned $94,320,883 during its opening weekend and a total of $333,718,600 in that region. Its worldwide box office gross amounted to $773,350,376.

Guardians of the Galaxy won 52 awards and received 103 nominations internationally during and after its release year^【4】. The film received Academy Award (Oscar) nominations for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Visual Effects^【5】.

At the Saturn Awards, prestigious honors for science fiction and fantasy, it won Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture, Best Director (James Gunn), Best Actor (Chris Pratt), and Best Makeup. It also received the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form), the Hollywood Film Award for Makeup of the Year, and the Hollywood Film Award for Blockbuster of the Year^【6】.
