Feast on the Samanyolu: Ramadan Writings (Book)

Feast on the Samanyolu is a compilation of essays by Sezai Karakoç, primarily published during Ramadan periods and centered on fasting. While focusing on the spiritual dimension of fasting, the work also offers personal impressions of the Ramadan atmosphere and social snapshots of the era. The essays are presented to the reader either with the dates of their original publication in newspapers and journals or indicated in parentheses within the book. The essay titled “Life in the Mirror of Ramadan,” written specifically for this volume, appears for the first time in this collection.

The book examines the worldly and spiritual dimensions of the act of fasting separately. Sezai Karakoç defines acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and almsgiving as “weapons,” emphasizing that these spiritual tools protect the individual against material and psychological deviations. The idea that Ramadan evokes a noble table, a feast set in the heavens, is one of the central metaphors of the text. The author interprets fasting not merely as a physical deprivation but as an ascent of the soul.

The Ascent of the Soul – Mi‘raj and Quest: Fasting is defined as an ascent, a mi‘raj journey, in the sense of “urûc.” The text describes how the human soul can transcend its material limitations through this spiritual odyssey.

Karakoç employs dense metaphor and symbolic language. The religious and Sufi discourse is interwoven with poetic elements, acquiring a profound and philosophical depth. The narration is objective and explanatory, prioritizing intellectual content over intense emotionality. The essays, in terms of their content, examine both inner spiritual states and the metaphorical relationships between society and the individual.
