Esenyurt Sezai Karakoç Anatolian High School

Esenyurt Sezai Karakoç Anadolu Lisesi is a public secondary education institution located in the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Neighborhood of Esenyurt District, Istanbul Province. The school operates under the authority of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of National Education.^【1】

The institution began its educational activities on 22 August 2022. It is named after Ahmet Sezai Karakoç, who was born in 1933 in the Ergani district of Diyarbakır and established himself as a poet, writer and politician within Turkish literature and intellectual life. The establishment and operations of the school were carried out in response to population growth and increasing educational demands in the region.^【2】

Esenyurt Sezai Karakoç Anadolu Lisesi is a state school under the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of National Education and operates within the hierarchical structure of the Esenyurt District Governorship and the District Directorate of National Education.

The school’s operations are grounded in legal frameworks including the Fundamental Law of National Education No. 1739, the Civil Servants Law No. 657, and the Public Financial Management and Control Law No. 5018. Its administrative processes are conducted in accordance with the 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, following principles of transparency, accountability and scientific rigor.^【3】

The institution provides secondary education. The educational schedule operates on a dual-shift system: morning sessions from 07:00 to 12:50 and afternoon sessions from 13:10 to 19:00. The first foreign language is English and the second foreign language is German. The learning environment incorporates fiber-optic internet connectivity and interactive whiteboards as part of the Fatih Project.^【4】

Student admissions are conducted based on local placement criteria (address-based system). According to 2024 data, the school’s minimum admission score is 62 on the Secondary Education Achievement Score (OBP). Registration procedures and promotion processes are centrally managed in accordance with regulations issued by the Ministry of National Education.^【5】

The school campus is built on a total area of 7,383.52 square meters, of which 5,170 square meters are occupied by buildings and 2,213 square meters by outdoor grounds. The reinforced concrete school building consists of one basement level, one ground floor and three standard floors.

The physical facilities include 40 classrooms, a library, one each for physics-chemistry-biology (PCB) and computer laboratories, a conference hall, two guidance offices, a cafeteria and two mosques. Heating is provided by a central natural gas-fired system.^【6】

The school administration consists of one principal and four vice principals. As of the 2023–2024 academic year, 79 teachers are employed at the institution.

The staff structure includes subject teachers, guidance counselors, administrative personnel, support staff and security officers. The majority of teachers hold bachelor’s degrees, and 16.4 percent have completed postgraduate education.^【7】

A total of 1,566 students are enrolled at the school. Of these, 937 are female and 629 are male. The distribution by grade level includes 25 sections in the ninth grade and 15 sections in the tenth grade. The student-to-teacher ratio is approximately 19:1. The student body primarily consists of children from families residing in Esenyurt District with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.^【8】

A variety of social activities are organized under the coordination of the school’s social activities committee. In sports, the school has achieved success including first place in the Esenyurt District School Sports competition for Girls’ Junior Category B, first place in the Istanbul Youth Games cross-country races, and second place in district futsal competitions. Additionally, the school organizes chess tournaments, commemorative and celebration programs, and various cultural excursions.^【9】

In line with its future vision, the institution conducts strategic planning and R&D activities. As part of this effort, an “EU-ERASMUS Accreditation Team” has been established with the aim of aligning with international education standards and developing collaborative projects.
