Designation of Origin

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is a local durum wheat variety (Triticum durum ssp. compactum) unique to Elazığ province, Turkey, with preserved genetic integrity. It was registered as a Designation of Origin on September 16, 2021, under Industrial Property Law No. 6769, through an application by the Elazığ Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Elazığ Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Elazığ Sugar Beet Growers Cooperative.

Origin and Ecological Dependency

This wheat is a naturally occurring variety of the 28-chromosome wild Gernik, propagated solely from its own seeds. Its genetic purity is maintained, and it is closely tied to Elazığ’s unique climatic and soil conditions. The microclimate created by the Euphrates River and surrounding dams (Keban, Kalecik, Cip, Karakaya) plays a critical role in its development, promoting rapid root growth in early stages and enhancing resistance to cold and drought.

Morphological and Physical Characteristics

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is a winter wheat with a semi-prostrate to semi-erect growth form. Plant height ranges from 80–140 cm. The spikes are white, awned, and dense, with a spike length of 3.5–7 cm and 24–30 grains per spike. The grains are large, elongated, with a humped back and a distinct longitudinal groove on the front.

Physical and chemical properties include:

  • Grain Color: Amber yellow to red (2–3 on the scale)
  • Vitreousness: 70–100%
  • Thousand Kernel Weight: 26–58 g
  • Hectoliter Weight: 80–100 kg
  • Protein Content: 10–15%
  • Hardness Index (SKC): 70–100

These characteristics, particularly in clay-loam soils, contribute to its high vitreousness and hardness.

Growing Conditions and Production Method

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is a cool-climate cereal. It requires 8–10°C and over 60% relative humidity during germination and tillering, and 10–15°C with 65% humidity during stem elongation. A total of 500 mm of precipitation spread across the growing season is sufficient for optimal yield. Temperatures below -3°C during heading can cause damage.

The preferred soil is deep, well-drained clay-loam. Crop rotation or fallow systems are typically used. Sowing occurs in autumn when soil temperature reaches 8–10°C, using 22–24 kg/da for machine sowing or 26–28 kg/da for broadcasting.

Fertilization is based on soil analysis, with half of the nitrogen fertilizer applied at sowing and the other half during tillering. Irrigation is critical during stem elongation and heading, with a single irrigation during heading recommended if water is limited. Weed control and, if necessary, chemical treatments are applied.

Harvest is conducted using combine harvesters or bundle-making machines. The grains are dried and stored in warehouses. Seeds reserved for planting are cleaned, treated, and prepared for the next season. Yields range from 150–300 kg/da under dry conditions and 300–422 kg/da under irrigated conditions.

Uses and Inspection

Elazığ Menceki Wheat is widely used in local dishes and soups. The product or its packaging must bear the “Elazığ Menceki Wheat” designation and origin logo; if not feasible, the logo must be displayed prominently at the place of business.

Inspections are conducted at least twice a year by the Elazığ Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, verifying seed suitability, product characteristics, adherence to the production method, and proper labeling. Expert support from public or private entities may be sought if needed.
