East (TV Series)

East is a semi-autobiographical production developed by comedian Doğu Demirkol based on his own life story. The series, which began airing on BluTV in 2021, centers on a young man trapped between societal expectations and his childhood dream of becoming a comedian. The character of Doğu is introduced as a university student studying computer engineering under family pressure but unable to graduate. His academic failure, combined with societal expectations and familial pressure, forms the core conflict of the series.

At the heart of the series is the character of Doğu, surrounded by oppressive yet familiar figures. His constantly nagging sister Kübra, his family who pressure him with the refrain “You can’t become a Yılmaz,” and his pessimistic friend Özgür all serve not only as obstacles in Doğu’s life but also as sources of humor. Through characters such as Zeynep, Zerrin, and Orhan like, the narrative constructs a mental world caught between the individual’s desire to realize their dreams and the life path imposed by their environment.

The script for Doğu was written by Doğu Demirkol and Murat Özsoy. İlay Alpgiray directs from the chair. Production is handled by Koray Köse and Ferhat Bilgin under the BKM Kitchen umbrella. Filming for the first season took place in Istanbul. Preparations for the second season were completed in 2022, and filming began after lively and enjoyable script readings.

The series unfolds in a structure that directly blends humor with critiques of traditional family structures and the education system. The situations Doğu finds himself in are both familiar and authentic to viewers. The dilemmas faced by the character are largely drawn from Doğu Demirkol’s own life experiences, resulting in a narrative free from artificiality, occasionally dramatic but predominantly infused with land humor and ironic tone.
