Cihangir Republic (Series)

The series “Cihangir Cumhuriyeti” is a production set in the Cihangir neighborhood of Istanbul, focusing on the lives of characters embedded in artistic and literary circles. Written by Akın Aksu and directed by Mustafa Kara, the series constructs a narrative centered on the internal conflicts and social relationships of its characters.

The series “Cihangir Cumhuriyeti” examines the inner contradictions of a group of characters living in Istanbul’s Cihangir neighborhood who define themselves as intellectuals. These individuals reveal how the sensitivities brought by modern life have transformed into hollow displays, presenting various forms of isolated existence. Despite their involvement in cinema, literature, and art, these characters are described as “lost souls” who avoid confronting their pasts, spend their days in café conversations, and seek meaning in their lives through political or artistic escapism. The series explores how these individuals, trapped in the shadow of old friendships and an ironic existence, navigate between tragicomic situations in their struggle to hold on to life. At its core, the series tells the story of figures who strive to capture the spirit of their time yet never manage to realize themselves.

Mustafa Kara directed the series, with Akın Aksu writing the screenplay. İbrahim Elma served as producer. The production extensively features locations, streets, and social spaces of the Cihangir neighborhood. This spatial choice is seen as a deliberate effort to reflect both the physical characteristics of the setting and its fictional atmosphere. The characters’ circumstances are supported by visual storytelling techniques, and the plot is conveyed through these elements.

The series “Cihangir Cumhuriyeti” addresses contemporary themes such as individualism, loneliness, and superficiality in social relationships. Through its story set in Cihangir—a neighborhood known for intense social interaction—the series explores various dimensions of distance between individuals and breakdowns in communication. The characters’ avoidance of confronting their pasts and their reliance on superficial conversations to sustain relationships are linked to their personal development processes. Additionally, some characters’ search for meaning through political or artistic discourse, along with the uncertainties they experience in this pursuit, are examined within an existential framework. The ways in which the characters cope with everyday situations lend a sociological observation quality to the narrative.

The series “Cihangir Cumhuriyeti” premiered on TRT’s digital platform Tabii. The series consists of one season with ten episodes; it has not yet been confirmed whether a second season will be produced.
