China's Military Parade Held in Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of World War II

The military parade organized by China to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II took place on 3 September 2025 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing and is one of the country’s comprehensive events aimed at historical remembrance and military demonstration.

The event was held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, which concluded with Japan’s surrender. The official ceremony was designated as “Victory Day” with the aim of emphasizing national historical memory. The event began in the morning and proceeded with a speech by President Xi Jinping followed by a military procession. Xi conveyed the message that “humanity must choose between peace and war.”

The parade was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Iranian President Masoud Pezashkian, Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing, and 26 other heads of state from various countries.

The parade on Tiananmen Square showcased advanced technological systems including hypersonic missiles, unmanned aerial and maritime vehicles, and radar systems. Notably, the DF-26 “Guam Killer” missile and the JL-3 submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile stood out. Additionally, air defense lasers and nuclear-capable missiles were also displayed.

Prior to the ceremony, stringent security measures were implemented. Roads and schools in Beijing were closed during the parade duration, nighttime rehearsals were conducted, and extensive logistical preparations were made. Approximately 50,000 spectators gathered on Tiananmen Square during the event.

The absence of Western leaders at the parade attracted attention. Trump claimed the event was not a challenge to the United States.

September 3 is regarded in China as the official end of World War II and the day commemorating victory over Japan. This ceremony can be understood as part of China’s narrative that frames its historical trauma as a process of national rebirth. Educational and security institutions were mobilized in support of the event.
