The film begins in 1995 on Hala the capital planet of the Kree Empire with the story of Vers a member of the Starforce who suffers from memory loss and nightmares about her past. Trained by her commander and mentor Yon-Rogg to control her powers Vers is guided by the Kree artificial intelligence Supreme Intelligence to suppress her emotions and serve the Kree people unaware that she carries an implant suppressing her true abilities.

During a mission in the war between the Kree and the shape-shifting Skrulls Vers is captured by Skrull commander Talos. While her memories are scanned it is revealed that she was in fact a pilot on Earth working with Dr. Wendy Lawson on a revolutionary light-speed engine. Escaping from the Skrulls Vers crash-lands in Los Angeles where she encounters S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury and rookie agent Phil Coulson.

Reviewing Air Force records Vers and Fury discover that she is in fact Carol Danvers presumed dead after a test flight in 1989. Danvers remembers that Yon-Rogg whom she believed to be her mentor had actually killed Dr. Lawson a renegade Kree scientist named Mar-Vell and that she had absorbed energy from the engine’s explosion granting her superhuman powers. Learning that the Skrulls are in fact refugees seeking a new home Danvers destroys her implant unlocking her true power and defeats the Kree forces. At the end of the film Danvers departs Earth to find a new home for the Skrulls leaving Fury a modified distress beacon. Fury names his hero-finding initiative after her call sign “Avenger”.^【2】
