Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) is a 2014 American action adventure and science fiction film directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. This production is part of the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and serves as a sequel to the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger. The film follows Steve Rogers as he struggles to adapt to the modern world while working alongside Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to uncover an international conspiracy.

The story takes place two years after the battle in New York involving the Avengers. Steve Rogers (Captain America) works in Washington D.C. under the direction of S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury and is attempting to adjust to modern American society. After a mission, Fury is attacked by a mysterious Soviet assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Before being fatally wounded — later revealed to be a feigned death — Fury warns Rogers not to trust anyone, stating that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated from within, and hands him a memory device containing critical data^【1】.

Following Fury’s shooting, S.H.I.E.L.D. official Alexander Pierce labels Rogers a traitor for refusing to share the information he possesses, and the organization mobilizes to capture him. On the run, Rogers teams up with agent Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) and a newly met former soldier, Sam Wilson (Falcon). Their investigation leads them to an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. bunker in New Jersey, where they encounter Arnim Zola, whose consciousness was transferred to supercomputers in 1972 and preserved. Zola reveals that since the end of World War II, HYDRA has secretly infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and established a structure designed to trigger global chaos, compelling people to willingly surrender their freedoms.

HYDRA’s next step is Operation Insight, which involves using three new-generation airships (Helicarriers) linked to spy satellites to identify millions of individuals who could pose a future threat to HYDRA by scanning data ranging from bank records to medical histories, then eliminating them preemptively. Captain America and his allies devise a plan to replace the control chips that determine the airships’ targets. During the execution of the plan, they confront the Winter Soldier, who is revealed to be Bucky Barnes, Rogers’ closest friend during World War II, who was presumed dead but captured and subjected to mind-control experiments by HYDRA. In the ensuing battle, the airships are destroyed when their altered control chips cause them to fire upon each other; Pierce is killed and HYDRA’s infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. is exposed to the public. At the end of the confrontation, the Winter Soldier pulls Rogers from the water and then disappears.

Chris Evans portrays the central character Steve Rogers / Captain America. He is joined by Scarlett Johansson as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson as the organization’s leader Nick Fury. Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier, Rogers’ close friend from World War II who was later brainwashed and transformed into a weapon.

Robert Redford portrays Alexander Pierce, the film’s primary antagonist and a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. official. Redford’s casting was influenced by writer Christopher Markus, who drew inspiration from 1970s political thriller films in which Redford starred. Additionally, actor Anthony Mackie caught the attention of producer Kevin Feige after repeatedly emailing Marvel officials expressing his desire to portray a Marvel comic book character, leading to his inclusion in the cast as Sam Wilson / Falcon^【2】.

Although principal photography concluded on 27 June, the directors and crew reunited for two weeks of additional filming in early 2014. These reshoots took place at Marvel Studios, which also hosted production for other films in the series, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Additional scenes, including open-air chase and fight sequences, were filmed in Cleveland, Ohio (at West 3rd and Lakeside Avenue). Production design was handled by Peter Wenham, cinematography by Trent Opaloch, and editing by Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt. The score was composed by Henry Jackman.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier achieved significant commercial success for its studio. In its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, it earned $95,023,721 USD, and a total of $259,766,572 USD in those regions. Its worldwide gross reached $714,421,503 USD. Distributed in Türkiye by UIP Türkiye, the film opened on 11 April 2014 and attracted 116,130 viewers during its opening weekend, earning 1,476,541 TL; by the end of its 10-week theatrical run, it had drawn a total of 434,465 viewers and generated 5,014,601 TL in revenue^【3】.

Receiving widespread critical acclaim, the film received numerous award nominations. Its most notable nomination was for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards (Oscars) (Dan DeLeeuw, Russell Earl, Bryan Grill, Daniel Sudick)^【4】.
