Cağaloğlu Anatolian High School

Cağaloğlu Anadolu Lisesi is a longstanding secondary education institution under the authority of the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye, located in the Fatih district of İstanbul, on Babı Ali Street in the Molla Fenari neighborhood. The school’s foundations trace back to Darülmaarif (also known as Mekteb-i Maarif), one of the first modern institutions in Ottoman educational history to be constructed according to a European-style school plan. Today, the institution operates as an Anadolu Lisesi offering instruction in German and English, and includes a boarding facility.^【1】

The institution was established on 21 March 1850 under the name Darülmaarif in response to the modern civil service training needs that emerged during the Tanzimat period. Instruction began in a stone building endowed by Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan, mother of Sultan Abdülmecid; its first principal was Kemal Efendi. Among its earliest students were Şehzade Murad Efendi (Murad V) and Fatma Sultan. In 1873, the institution transitioned to an idadi status with the opening of its first civil service preparatory classes and subsequently expanded to include multiple levels of education.

Throughout the Balkan Wars and World War I, the institution underwent several building changes. In 1911 it became İnas İdadisi, in 1912 İstanbul İnas Sultanisi, and in 1915 Bezmialem Sultanisi. In 1924 it was relocated to the Meşihat Building in Süleymaniye under the name İstanbul Kız Lisesi. After serving temporarily in various buildings following a fire in 1926, it moved to its current building in Cağaloğlu during the 1933–1934 academic year.

In the 1983–1984 academic year, the school adopted the status of an Anadolu Lisesi offering German-language instruction and was renamed Cağaloğlu Anadolu Lisesi, transitioning to a coeducational model.^【2】

Cağaloğlu Anadolu Lisesi is a public school under the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye. The institution collaborates with higher education institutions to enhance its academic and scientific capacity. In this context, a cooperation protocol was signed with İstinye University on 10 December 2020.^【3】 This agreement provides for joint projects and scientific initiatives between the university and the high school.

The school operates on a full-day schedule, with classes held between 08:15 and 15:10. The primary foreign languages of instruction are German and English.

The curriculum enables students to obtain the German Language Diploma (Sprachdiplom). The school’s vision is to maximize students’ foreign language proficiency and university readiness through well-equipped laboratories and classrooms; its mission is to cultivate individuals committed to the principles of the Republic and grounded in scientific thought.^【4】

Throughout its historical development, the institution has employed various methods for student admission. During the Darülmaarif period, the initial student capacity was set at 250–260, later reduced to 180, and an entrance examination was introduced. Today, as an Anadolu Lisesi, the school admits students based on the centralized national examination system.^【5】

The main building of the institution was constructed in a modern style as a charitable endowment by Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan. The current campus includes 33 classrooms, one conference hall, one multipurpose hall, one infirmary, and one library with a capacity of 3,000 books. Additionally, the school operates a boarding facility for residential students. Access to the school is provided by Marmaray, bus, tram, and metro lines.^【6】

The school’s administrative structure consists of a principal and deputy principals. The current principal is Gökhan Karataş. The teaching staff comprises 61 educators, alongside administrative personnel and support staff.^【7】

The current student population is 737. The student profile has evolved over time: in its founding period, the school educated members of the imperial family and civil service candidates; for a period it served only female students (as İstanbul Kız Lisesi); since 1983 it has operated as a coeducational institution. The school accommodates both boarding and day students.^【8】

The school hosts various student clubs and publications to support student development. Periodic publications produced within the institution include "Yokuş Yukarı", "Tebeşir", "CALKimya", "Cal Kurier", "BABIALİ", and "Söz Ola". In addition to sports activities, students participate in scientific initiatives at the level of TÜBİTAK projects and science olympiads.^【9】

The school implements Erasmus+ projects and coordinates scientific initiatives with TÜBİTAK. In addition, under the framework of the protocol signed with İstinye University, joint projects and academic evaluation meetings are organized with former graduates who continue their university education.^【10】
