Brave (Eng. Brave) is a computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2012. Set in medieval Scotland, the story centers on Merida, a rebellious princess who defies traditional female roles and seeks to shape her own destiny. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian.

The film is set in medieval Scotland. It tells the story of Princess Merida, the spirited and free-spirited daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor, who faces pressure to marry according to tradition. While Queen Elinor insists Merida marry a noble suitor in accordance with custom, Merida opposes this arrangement and seeks help from a witch to determine her own fate. However, the magical solution she receives causes her mother to transform into a bear. Merida then struggles to undo her mistake and reunite her family.

The film revolves around themes of individual freedom, traditional gender roles, destiny, and family bonds. Through Merida’s character, it presents a stance against conventional female roles. Communication among family members, intergenerational conflict, and the importance of familial ties form the core narrative foundations. The idea of “determining one’s own fate” serves as a central motif.

Brave was released on 22 June 2012 and earned approximately $540 million worldwide. It generated about $237 million in the United States and approximately $303 million in international markets. With this performance, it became one of Pixar’s most commercially successful films, receiving positive critical and financial responses.

The film was produced by Pixar Animation Studios, with visual designs inspired by the natural geography of Scotland. During production, next-generation rendering engines and dynamic hair simulation software were employed. The modeling of Merida’s hair was recorded as one of the most technically challenging processes undertaken by Pixar up to that point. The film was inspired by Brenda Chapman’s personal experiences; however, Mark Andrews joined the project during the directing process. The score was composed by Patrick Doyle, blending traditional Celtic music elements with original orchestral themes.

• Merida – Kelly Macdonald: The film’s protagonist, portrayed as a princess renowned for her archery skills and refusal to conform to traditional expectations.
• Queen Elinor – Emma Thompson: Merida’s mother, who represents traditional values and protocol. She spends much of the film in bear form.
• King Fergus – Billy Connolly: Merida’s father, a brave and good-natured warrior known for his devotion to his family.
• The Witch – Julie Walters: The character who provides Merida with a magical cake, setting the events of the story in motion. She embodies the traditional witch archetype.
• The Triplets (Harris, Hubert, Hamish): Merida’s younger brothers. Their silent but mischievous nature adds humor to the story.
