Beyazit Bestami Türbesi

Beyazıt Bestami Türbesi is a historical and religious structure located in the Kırıkhan district of Hatay Province. It is situated on a hill known as Darb-ı Sak Kalesi (Darbes), within the Alabeyli Neighborhood under the district center. This structure, attributed as a mausoleum to the Sufi mystic Bayezid-i Bistami whose actual tomb lies in Bistam, Iran, holds the character of a makam tomb. Positioned commanding the Amik Plain, the türbe forms part of a külliye complex including a mosque and visitation areas, and is regarded as one of the region’s key centers for devotional tourism.

The area where the türbe stands is recorded in historical sources as Darb-ı Sak Kalesi. The maintenance and guardianship of the structure (türbedarlık) have been sustained through a tradition dating back to the Ottoman period. In 1306 AH, an imperial decree issued by Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II entrusted the service of the türbe to the Şanverdi family. In accordance with this decree, the role of türbedar has been carried out by the same family for four generations. Today, the administrative responsibility and upkeep of the türbe are managed by relevant members of this family.

Beyazıt Bestami Türbesi lies within the boundaries of Alabeyli Neighborhood, approximately four kilometers along the Kırıkhan-Hassa road. Its elevated position grants it a broad panoramic view and integrates harmoniously with surrounding water sources and wooded areas. Alongside the türbe building, a mosque used for worship is also present on the site. The structure is frequently visited by local residents and pilgrims.

The earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, described as “the disaster of the age,” caused structural damage to Beyazıt Bestami Türbesi. As a result of the disaster, portions of the türbe’s walls collapsed, and detached stones and debris fell onto the visitation area and the section housing the sandukah. Damage also occurred to the retaining walls and surrounding structures.

Bayezid-i Bistami (Tayfûr b. Îsâ), after whom the türbe is named, was a prominent Sufi mystic who lived during the 2nd century AH. According to sources, Bayezid-i Bistami spent most of his life in Bistam and died there; his actual grave is located in that city. However, as is common across the Islamic world, the structure in Kırıkhan, Hatay, was built as a “makam” in honor of his spiritual legacy.
