Assassin’s Creed Valhalla continues the action role-playing mechanics established in earlier entries of the series, Origins and Odyssey. The combat system allows players to wield weapons such as axes, swords and shields in both hands. Players can adopt various tactics including close-quarters combat, ranged attacks with bows or stealth assassinations using the Hidden Blade. Character progression is facilitated through a skill tree centered on three primary styles: close combat, assassin and ranged combat. A core feature of the game is settlement management. Players can develop their clan’s settlement by constructing buildings such as barracks, blacksmiths and tattoo parlors, which unlock new abilities and customization options. Additionally, a free rogue-lite game mode called Forgotten Saga was added post-launch via updates.

Among these characters are Ivar the Boneless and his brother Halfdan Ragnarsson, founders and leaders of the Great Heathen Army, also known as the Great Viking Army. Halfdan Ragnarsson is particularly known for his conquest of northern England. In the expansion pack The Siege of Paris, the main antagonist is Charles III, also known as Charles the Fat. This expansion also features historical figures such as his wife Saint Richardis and Gozlin of Paris. Although not directly appearing in the game, figures such as Saint Brendan of Clonfert are referenced through standing stones and puzzles scattered throughout the world. These characters serve as key elements that ground the game’s world in historical context.
