Apaşlar (Music Group)

In the early 1960s, the musical group Apaşlar was founded by musician Mehmet Soyarslan and Yalçınkaya Tümay and is regarded as one of the pioneering communities of Turkish rock music in important. The group emerged as one of the leading figures of the era’s most influential musical movements, Anatolia rock and beat music, and reached wide audiences especially through their collaborations with Cem Karaca.

Apaşlar gained major recognition in the 1960s when they finished second in Hürriyet’s Golden Microphone Song Competition. During this period, bassist Ahmet Tuzcuoğlu brought Cem Karaca into the group. With Karaca’s powerful vocals, Apaşlar began producing songs that resonated deeply and played a pioneering role in the development of rock music in Türkiye.

The group’s repertoire included unforgettable songs of the era such as "Resimdeki Gözyaşları", "Bu Son Olsun", "Ayrılık Günümüz" and "İstanbul’u Dinliyorum" like. Additionally, the song "Ayşen", composed by Yalçınkaya Tümay, became immortalized through Cem Karaca’s voice.

During their Germany tours, Apaşlar signed an agreement with a Turkish record label in Cologne and recorded albums accompanied by a large orchestra. Using advanced recording techniques unavailable in Türkiye at the time, they prepared the arrangements for many songs in a studio environment.

Strong friendships were formed among the group members. Erkin Koray gave Yalçınkaya Tümay the nickname “Pasha Yalçın” as a sign of his respect. Tümay maintained his dedication to music until the end of his life and continued composition.

The Apaşlar Group left a lasting legacy in Turkish rock music, inspiring many musicians and making a significant contribution to laying the foundations of the Anadolu rock movement.
