Alacahan Caravanserai

Alacahan Kervansarayı is a historical structure located within the boundaries of Alacahan Village in the Kangal district of Sivas Province, approximately 100 kilometers along the Sivas–Malatya highway. It is recognized as one of the caravanserais situated along the trade routes of Anatolia during the Seljuk period. Its position on the historic Baghdad–Silk Road route provides significant context for its historical function.

The caravanserai is situated in Alacahan Village, southeast of the city center of Sivas and within the administrative boundaries of Kangal District. It is noted to lie along the route extending from Sivas toward Malatya, on the historic trade road known as the Baghdad–Silk Road. Caravanserais along this route were constructed to ensure the safety of commercial goods and travelers moving in an east–west direction. In this context, Alacahan Kervansarayı has been regarded as an important lodging and protective structure.

Alacahan Kervansarayı was constructed in the winter-type han (fully enclosed han) typology, with its architectural layout designed to suit this function. Key architectural features include:

• Plan Organization: The interior space consists of a central vaulted hall covered by a barrel vault, flanked by two side halls opening into it. These three areas form an enclosed rectangular interior layout.
• Materials and Wall Construction: The wall masonry is notable for its alternating use of black and white stones. This technique imparts a distinctive appearance to the structure and serves as an exemplary case of stonemasonry.
• Entrance Design: The entrance is provided through a projecting, round-arched opening. The arch is relatively low and flattened, and no inscription has been found above the opening.
• Lighting: As the roof is fully enclosed, interior illumination is achieved through small windows located above the vaults.
• Building Materials: The primary construction material is stone. The alternating use of black and white stone creates a distinctive texture in the walls.

The exact construction date of the structure is not recorded in historical sources. However, a 2016 academic study by El Turco conducted a scientific assessment of the building’s historical period based on its architectural elements, construction techniques, and location. The study noted that Alacahan Kervansarayı exhibits similarities to other Anatolian Seljuk-era hans in terms of its plan, stonework, and architectural character. Since the structure lacks any inscribed text, its dating relies entirely on architectural analysis.
