Adil Can Güven is a ceramic and tile artist. In his workshop in İznik, he produces tiles and ceramics using traditional materials and techniques. By researching the ceramic traditions of different historical periods in Anatolia and applying them in his work, he has been awarded the “Living Human Treasures Award” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for his mastery and dedication to traditional motifs.
Adil Can Güven was born in 1953 in İnegöl district of Bursa. He began his engagement with tile and ceramic art as a child apprentice under his maternal uncle and master, Abdurrahman Özer. This master-apprentice relationship formed the foundational experience that shaped his professional path.
To refine his skills in tile and ceramic production, Güven worked in various ceramic centers across Anatolia. He received training from master artisans in Çanakkale, Kütahya and İnegöl, gaining hands-on experience in traditional production methods and kiln technologies.
After mastering his craft, Adil Can Güven opened his first workshop in 1983 in Akhisar, a village under İnegöl in Bursa. He later moved his operations to İznik, where he continued his production activities.
In 1995, at the invitation of Uludağ University, he served as an instructor in the tile and ceramic program established at İznik Vocational School, teaching for approximately five years.
Adil Can Güven, who has been producing tiles and ceramics for 54 years using traditional motifs, has been awarded the “Living Human Treasures Award” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for his mastery in this field.
Since 2001, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has recognized Adil Can Güven’s tile and ceramic works produced using traditional techniques as works of art.

Adil Can and Nursan Güven (AA)
In his work, Adil Can Güven researches and applies techniques from various historical periods of Anatolian ceramic tradition. In his workshop in İznik, he produces pieces based on Byzantine, Seljuk, Beylik, Ottoman and İznik ceramic traditions using traditional materials, motifs and production methods, alongside developing his own original designs. Furthermore, by studying and reviving ceramic techniques historically practiced across Anatolia, he has produced a total of 13 distinct examples of tiles and ceramics representing different historical periods.
The artist continues his production activities in his workshop in İznik. This workshop is not merely an individual studio but functions as a family workshop. The production process involves the active participation of his wife Nursan Güven, his sons and daughter-in-law; both manufacturing and practical training for those seeking to learn the craft are conducted within the workshop.
Adil Can Güven’s approach to production is grounded in the historical continuity of Anatolian ceramic culture and aims to reinterpret techniques from different eras within contemporary practice. This approach has also been examined in academic studies on modern interpretations of the İznik ceramic tradition (Toprak, 2022).
Adil Can Güven continues his production activities in his workshop in İznik. Alongside traditional tile and ceramic production, the workshop also focuses on training apprentices, and the artist remains committed to supporting those who wish to learn the craft.
