Abdullah Tayyip Olçok (24 June 1999 – 15 July 2016) was a high school student who was martyred on the 15 July 2016 coup attempt alongside his father, Erol Olçok, on the Bosphorus Bridge.
Abdullah Tayyip Olçok was born on 24 June 1999 in Istanbul as the first child of his family. He spent his childhood and youth in Istanbul.
He began his education at Capitol Primary School in 2006. Two years later, he transferred to Efdal Private Primary School. In 2013, he started high school at Ahmet Keleşoğlu Anatolian High School. In 2015, he transferred to Koşuyolu Özel Birey Basic High School. It is known that he intended to study law at university and was preparing for university entrance exams.【1】
On the night of 15 July 2016, Abdullah Tayyip Olçok wished to accompany his father, Erol Olçok, who had taken to the streets in opposition to the FETÖ coup attempt. Despite his father’s warning to stay home, he replied, “Where you go, I go” and left Altunizade with him. Holding flags, they walked first to Altunizade and then to the Bosphorus Bridge (today’s 15 July Martyrs Bridge).【2】
On the Bosphorus Bridge, Erol Olçok was shot while attempting to persuade FETÖ-affiliated coup elements to stand down. Abdullah Tayyip Olçok, rushing to aid his father, was wounded by armor-piercing bullets and martyred at the scene. Erol Olçok later died in the hospital to which he was taken.
A funeral ceremony was held for Erol Olçok and Abdullah Tayyip Olçok at the Mosque of the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the ceremony. After the funeral prayer, father and son were buried side by side in Karacaahmet Cemetery.
