Abdulbaki Demirel Murder

The Abdulbaki Demirel murder is the incident that occurred on 10 May 2026 in the Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul, in which 15-year-old Abdülbaki Demirel was stabbed to death. Following the incident, two suspects under the age of 18 were taken into custody and later arrested. Subsequently, another person was arrested on the grounds of having sent threatening messages to Demirel’s family.

The murder took place at Şehit Sadık Bezer Park in the Muratçeşme neighborhood of Istanbul’s Büyükçekmece district. A dispute between two groups quickly escalated into a stabbing fight. During the altercation, Abdülbaki Demirel and Savaş I. were injured. The injured were taken to hospital by medical teams; Abdülbaki Demirel, who suffered severe injuries, died at the hospital where he was receiving treatment. Savaş I.’s treatment is ongoing. It was reported that Abdülbaki Demirel received multiple stab wounds during the incident.

Following the incident, Istanbul Police Directorate units launched an investigation. Surveillance footage from the surrounding area was examined and analyzed. As a result of these efforts, E.B. (16) and M.A.D. (17), identified as participants in the fight, were taken into custody. After completing procedural formalities at the police station, the suspects were brought before a judge who ordered their detention.

Subsequently, security camera footage related to the incident was released to the media. The footage showed the altercation beginning in the park, the injured individuals dispersing into the surrounding area, and the parties leaving the scene. It was noted that one of the injured sought refuge in a nearby residential complex while the other went to a nearby store to seek help.

After the incident, threatening messages were sent to Abdülbaki Demirel’s family. An investigation conducted by the Istanbul Police Directorate’s Cyber Crime Prevention Branch determined that the sender of the messages, Ö.F.A. (20), had no known connection to the perpetrators of the crime.

The suspect was apprehended at his residence in Maltepe and taken into custody. A preliminary examination of his mobile phone revealed a significant number of pieces of evidence related to the crime. Investigations also indicated possible links to offenses including “unlawful acquisition or disclosure of data,” “unauthorized access to information systems,” “obstruction, damage, deletion or alteration of data,” and “obtaining information concerning state security.”

Pursuant to instructions from the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, a separate investigation was initiated by the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office under these criminal charges.

The suspect, after giving his statement at the police station, was detained by the On-Duty Peace Criminal Court in Büyükçekmece on charges of “threatening through the use of an organization’s intimidating power” and “unlawful acquisition of personal data.”
