Espiye (District)
Espiye, located on the coast of the Black Sea, is a coastal district of Giresun distinguished by its deep historical roots and an economy based on hazelnut cultivation.
Where Does the Name Come From?
The name Espiye appears in historical records as "Espiyelü". According to historians, this name is derived from the Persian word "Esb", meaning "horse". Research into the origin of the name points to two primary interpretations: the first is "place of abundant horses", and the second refers to "yalı atı", a term describing horses running along the shoreline.

Historical Structures: Andoz Castle
One of the most important historical structures in the district is Andoz Castle, situated on a hill overlooking the sea. The castle was constructed not for residential purposes but to monitor threats coming from the sea, oversee routes, and ensure the security of the harbor. Andoz Castle belongs to the category of small-scale military fortifications and measures approximately 90 paces in length and 20 paces in width.【1】
Geographical Features and Agricultural Structure
Espiye district is situated between the basins formed by the Yağlıdere and Gelevera rivers. These streams, originating in the mountainous regions, flow through the district center before emptying into the Black Sea. The district’s most important agricultural activity and source of livelihood is hazelnut production. In past periods, rice cultivation was also practiced in the region; however, rice farming was banned long ago due to its association with the spread of malaria. Today, in addition to hazelnut production, tea cultivation also holds a place in the district’s vegetation and economy.
Cultural Traditions and Transhumance
The transhumance culture and its associated traditions remain vibrant in the district. Every year in July, following the completion of agricultural activities, a traditional seasonal migration known as the "Otçu Göçü" takes place. The local population moves collectively to the highland pastures accompanied by cultural music and folk dances. Among the region’s best-known pastures is Karaovacık Yaylası, where annual traditional festivals are held, preserving local culture and social solidarity.
