The work was commissioned by the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons to commemorate a public anatomy lesson given by Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, who held the title praelector anatomiae (Latin; lecturer in anatomy, i.e., the official anatomy instructor of the guild).
