Gövdesi köşeli ve seyrek tüylerle kaplı olup 1 metreye kadar boylanabilir. Yaprakları soluk yeşil renkte, beyaz damarlı ve dikenlidir. Çiçekleri 5–10 cm uzunluğunda, genellikle pembemsi-mor renkte olup temmuz–ağustos aylarında açar. Çiçek başçığında yer alan tohumlar paraşüt benzeri tüylere sahip olup rüzgârla uzak mesafelere taşınır. Enginar ve marul ile yakın akrabadır.
