Zerzevan Castle
Zerzevan Castle is a historical military settlement built on a high hill near the Çınar district of Diyarbakır. The settlement, which began around three thousand years ago during the Assyrian period, was transformed into a garrison fortress during the Roman Empire and remained in use for many centuries. Excavations conducted at the castle in modern times have revealed significant remains including walls towers underground structures and the Temple of Mithras. Due to its historical and cultural value Zerzevan Castle is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

Where is Zerzevan Castle?
Zerzevan Castle is located near the Demirölçek Village of the Çınar district in Diyarbakır. It is situated on a rocky hill 124 metres above sea level. This position grants the castle a strategic vantage point overlooking the surrounding valley and roads.
A Journey Through Thousands of Years: Who Used the Castle?
The earliest settlement in the area of Zerzevan Castle dates to the Assyrian period. During the Roman Empire the castle was converted into a military garrison and remained in active use for a long time. Structures from the Roman period continued to exist even after its decline. The castle served as an important defensive center until the region was conquered by Muslim forces in 639.

Strong Walls and Tall Towers
Zerzevan Castle is notable for its robust defensive structures. The surrounding walls extend approximately 1200 metres in length and portions of them have survived to the present day. Additionally the castle features a watch and defense tower standing 21 metres high. These towers and walls were constructed to protect the fortress from enemy attacks.

The Hidden World Beneath the Ground
Zerzevan Castle contains numerous structures not only above ground but also underground. During excavations an underground church a large shelter capable of accommodating 400 people and various secret passageways were discovered. These structures provided refuge and protection for inhabitants during times of war.

A Treasure on the UNESCO List
Due to its historical and cultural significance Zerzevan Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2020. Inclusion on this list underscores the castle’s importance as a global heritage site. The structures both above and below ground at Zerzevan Castle make it a unique historical treasure.
