Uşak City History Museum

Uşak City History Museum is an institution that carries the social, cultural, and economic past of the city of Uşak into the present. Museums preserve and exhibit the history of a city or subject through documents, artifacts, and visual presentations. The primary aim of this museum is to convey to visitors Uşak’s thousands-of-years-long history and especially its pioneering role in the history of the Republic of Türkiye.

The museum was established through the restoration of a historic building located in the center of Uşak. This structure was built in the 1890s and over time served various public services.

The museum building was constructed approximately 130 years ago. Since its construction, it has served multiple functions. During the Turkish War of Independence, it was used as an important military headquarters, followed by decades of service as a hospital and administrative building. In 2016, it was restored and opened to the public as the Uşak City History Museum.

The exhibitions at the museum do not present Uşak’s history in a strict chronological order but rather through a thematic approach. This allows visitors to focus on topics that interest them most.

The city of Uşak has hosted pioneering initiatives in several areas of Turkish history. The museum dedicates a special section to these significant firsts, including the establishment of Türkiye’s first sugar factory in Uşak and its leadership in other cultural domains. The museum has been designed using modern museological techniques. Exhibits include wax figures, dioramas (three-dimensional reconstructions), and interactive screens. The main themes presented are:

• The War of Independence and Uşak: The city’s role in the struggle for independence is narrated through documents and photographs.
• Economic History: Famous Uşak carpets, geographically indicated products such as tarhana, and the history of commercial life are displayed.
