Originally serving in the United States Navy as **USS Gudgeon**, the submarine spent 30 years in the U.S. Navy and was a key vessel during the Cold War. In 1983, it was transferred to the Turkish Navy and raised the Turkish flag in California. On **September 30, 1983**, it officially entered the Turkish Navy inventory as **TCG Hızır Reis**.
