Taşlıçay (District)
Ağrı is a charming district under the province of Ağrı, where nature and history intertwine. This settlement, located along a major transit route between Türkiye and Iran, is renowned for its towering mountains and its deep blue lake. Let us explore the story of these high plateaus and ice-cold waters together!
A Historical Journey
Human settlement in Taşlıçay and its surroundings dates back thousands of years, to around 4000 BCE. Over the centuries, this land has been home to numerous civilizations, from the Urartians to the Romans, and from the Seljuks to the Ottomans. The region was incorporated into Ottoman territory following the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514. After remaining under this administration for a long period, it was officially established as a district by law in 1954.
A Journey Through Time
April 14, 1918 is a particularly significant date for Taşlıçay. On this day, the district was fully liberated from enemy occupation, and its people regained their freedom.
The Lake at the Roof of Türkiye: Balık Gölü
One of the most captivating places in the district is undoubtedly Balık Gölü. Located at an elevation of 2241 meters above sea level, this lake is among the highest in Türkiye. A lava-dammed lake, Balık Gölü is fed by springs and underground water sources in its surroundings.

Natural Life and Livestock Breeding
In the higher elevations of Taşlıçay, especially during summer months, lie the lush green pastures of Sinek and Aladağ yaylaları. These highland meadows are of great importance to local communities engaged in livestock breeding. Additionally, the region’s most significant water source is the Murat River, which flows from east to west.
