Susamışlar Mansion

The Susamışlar Konağı, located in the city center of Sivas, is one of the notable examples of Ottoman-era civil architecture. Since its construction, the building has served various functions and been utilized by different users. The historical development, architectural features, and intended use of the mansion were shaped according to the residential construction concepts and social needs of its time. Today, as a venue for cultural activities, it stands as one of the structures contributing to the preservation of the city’s historical fabric.

The Susamışlar Konağı in the city center of Sivas is one of the most remarkable examples of Ottoman civil architecture. The pavilion above the entrance and the fountain on the front facade were constructed in 1815 by Benderli Ali Ağa. The other sections of the building are also believed to date from the same period, namely the early 19th century.

As was typical of Ottoman mansion architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries, the building originally featured an extensive complex of auxiliary structures. These included summer and winter rooms, a kitchen, pantry, veranda, guesthouse for travelers (han), storage warehouse, two stables, a hayloft, a gatekeeper’s room, a bakery, and a fountain, along with a courtyard and garden.

The surviving portions of the building have been restored to their original appearance through restoration efforts led by the Sivas Municipality. In recent times, the building has come to be known as the Susamışlar Konağı, named after the Susamış family (Mehmed Nuri Susamış and his sons).

Today, the Susamışlar Konağı is used by the Sivas Mevlana Sufi Culture and Sema Association. Classical music, Sufi music performances, Mevlevi rituals, and sema ceremonies are held within the building. These activities, conducted in accordance with the Mevlevi tradition, contribute significantly to the preservation of cultural heritage.

The Susamışlar Konağı holds both historical and cultural significance due to its architectural reflection of Ottoman mansion culture and its contemporary cultural function. Its current use supports the preservation of Sivas’s traditional urban fabric.
