## Article Content

The Sukhoi Su-30 is a multi-role, twin-engine, two-seat fighter aircraft developed by the Russian Sukhoi Aviation company, based on the Su-27 fighter jet. The Su-30, which made its first prototype flight in 1989 and entered service in 1996, was designed to perform both air superiority and ground attack missions.

### **Development and Design Features**

The Su-30 was derived from the Su-27PU, a two-seat version of the Su-27, during the Soviet era. Its purpose was to provide a platform for long-range missions, specifically for command and control and reconnaissance tasks with an in-flight refueling capability.

- **Fly-by-Wire and Thrust Vectoring:** The aircraft features an advanced fly-by-wire flight control system and engines with thrust vectoring. These technologies make the Su-30 exceptionally agile, allowing it to perform aerodynamically demanding maneuvers like the "Pugachev's Cobra."
- **High Range and In-Flight Refueling:** The Su-30's internal fuel capacity provides an operational range of up to 3,000 km, which can be extended to 5,200 km with an in-flight refueling probe. This feature allows the aircraft to remain on long-duration missions.
- **Avionics and Radar:** Different variants of the Su-30 use advanced avionics systems, such as the OEPS-27 electro-optical targeting system and the long-range Bars planar radar. These systems enhance the aircraft's ability to detect and track both air-to-air and air-to-ground targets.

### **Engine and Performance**

The Su-30 is powered by two **Saturn AL-31F** turbofan engines.

- **Engine Power:** These engines produce 33,400 lbf of thrust each, and with afterburner, this power can reach up to 55,120 lbf.
- **Speed:** It can reach a maximum speed of 1,320 mph (approx. 2,124 km/h) at sea level and Mach 2.0 (approx. 2,500 km/h) at high altitude. Its service ceiling is 17,300 meters.
- **Flight Control:** The aircraft can use its autopilot system during all flight phases and perform automatic navigation and landing approaches.

### **Weapon Systems**

The Su-30 can carry a wide range of weapons for both air superiority and ground attack missions.

- **Internal Weapon:** It is equipped with a standard 30mm GSh-301 automatic cannon with a capacity of 150 rounds.
- **External Payloads:** With twelve external hardpoints, it can carry up to 18,000 lbs (approx. 8,165 kg) of ordnance. This ordnance can include:
    - Air-to-air missiles
    - Air-to-ground missiles
    - Anti-ship missiles
    - Laser-guided bombs
    - Standard free-fall bombs and rockets

### **Variants and Users**

The Su-30 has many different variants derived from its basic design. These variants are typically tailored to the specific requirements of different countries.

- **Su-30MKI:** A modernized version developed for India. It features thrust-vectoring engines and canards.
- **Su-30MKK:** The version sold to China.
- **Su-30MKM:** The version produced for Malaysia.
- **Su-30SM:** Developed for the Russian Air and Naval Forces based on the Su-30MKI and MKM variants.
- **Other Versions:** There are also models produced with specialized avionics and arrangements for countries like Algeria (Su-30MKA), Venezuela (Su-30MKV), and Vietnam (Su-30MK2V).
