## Article Content

[Samandağ Ney](/en/detay/samandag-neyi-1e2a7/llms.txt) is a nine-segmented, end-blown flute made from Arundo donax L. reed grown exclusively in Samandağ, Hatay, Türkiye. It holds a geographical indication certificate registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on 23 November 2020.

### **Characteristics of the Reeds Used in Production**

Samandağ [Ney](/en/detay/ney-nedir-e7869/llms.txt) is crafted from Arundo donax L. reed species that grow only within the boundaries of [Samandağ district](/en/detay/samandag-neyi-efe3b/llms.txt), specifically in the Asi River delta. The designated growing area extends approximately 7 kilometers from Çevlik Beach to the foothills of Kel Mountain in Meydan Village, with a 500-meter coastal strip inland.

Distinctive features of these reeds include:

- Short and very regular segments (internodes)
- Shallow bud marks
- Consistent diameter, lumen diameter, and wall thickness values
- Anatomical structure with highly lignified but open-lumen cells
- Wide sclerenchymatic epidermal band and broad bundle sheaths

These traits ensure a high sound quality standard for [Samandağ Ney](/en/detay/samandag-neyi-240ac/llms.txt).

### **Structural Characteristics of Samandağ Ney**

Samandağ [Ney](/en/detay/what-is-the-ney-ef03b/llms.txt) holds a unique place among 13 different types of ney that can produce eight natural and five intermediary tones. Key structural features:

- Composed of 9 segments
- Diameter of 15–25 mm, featuring 7 finger holes (6 on the front, 1 on the back)
- Regular and specifically measured internode lengths
- Smooth and groove-free reed surface

These features contribute to the instrument's tonal balance and durability.

### **Production Method**

The production of Samandağ Ney involves the following steps:

1. Mature reeds are harvested in November and December.
2. Leaves are removed, and reeds are hung with weights to dry until spring.
3. Reeds are air-dried for an additional month in May–June.
4. Reeds with suitable internode lengths are selected.
5. Hollowing and cleaning of the reeds are performed.
6. Finger holes are drilled at designated segment points.
7. Parazvane and başpare (mouthpiece) are fitted to complete the ney.

Internode lengths range between 55 mm and 110 mm. The longer the length, the deeper the sound.

### **Economic and Cultural Value**

Registered as a geographical indication product by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on 23 November 2020, Samandağ Ney's recognition and production volume have significantly increased post-registration. Annual production has risen from approximately 800–1000 units to about five times that number.

### **Inspection and Protection**

Samandağ Ney production is monitored at least once annually, or more frequently if necessary, by authorities designated under the coordination of the [Antakya Chamber of Commerce and Industry](/en/detay/antakya-simidi-8ccd2/llms.txt). Inspection criteria include:

- The reed must be sourced from the Samandağ district.
- Compliance with physical characteristics (regular segments, smooth surface, etc.).
- Production must follow the specified methodology.
- Proper use of the geographical indication label and logo.
