The term derives from the French word rhapsodie, meaning "passionate literary or musical work." Its ultimate origin is the Ancient Greek word rhapsōidós (ῥαψῳδός). Historically, this term meant "a reciter of epics" and is formed from the combination of rháptō (ῥάπτω), meaning "to sew or stitch together," and ōidḗ (ᾠδή), meaning "song."
