Phoenician Castle
Finik Castle and its associated Inner Castle are historical defensive structures located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye, within the Cizre district of Şırnak Province. These fortifications were built atop high cliffs along the banks of the Tigris River, north of the Kasrik village. Historically used to protect the region, these structures are now recognized among Şırnak’s most significant historical heritage sites.
Location and Access
Finik Castle is situated in the Kasrik Valley, under the jurisdiction of Cizre. This area, traversed by the Tigris River, attracts attention for both its natural landscape and historical significance. The castle was constructed directly on natural rock formations. Access to the castle is via a stone-paved footpath that begins on the opposite slope of the Faki Tayran Mosque and extends up to the fortress. In the past, people used this path to ascend to the castle and observe the surrounding valley.

Historical Development
The exact date of construction of Finik Castle remains unknown. However, research indicates that the fortress was in use from antiquity through the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the castle underwent multiple repairs and reconstructions for various purposes. The Inner Castle, located within the main structure, served as the residential and defensive section for administrators and military personnel.
Architectural Structure
The castle was built of stone on a rugged rocky foundation. Mortar was generally not used in its walls. Although some sections have collapsed over time, towers (observation towers), sections of the curtain wall, water cisterns, and rooms carved directly into the rock are still visible. The Inner Castle consists of three sections, all of which were excavated directly into the bedrock. This feature renders the structure both strong and durable.
Conservation Status
Finik Castle and its Inner Castle are protected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Although certain parts have suffered damage, the fortress has largely retained its historical characteristics.
Touristic Value
Finik Castle is notable for its striking views overlooking the Tigris River. It holds significant cultural tourism value due to its natural surroundings and historical fabric. Visitors can observe traces of ancient civilizations while experiencing the beauty of the natural landscape firsthand.
