## Article Content

Overall Equipment Effectiveness ([OEE](/en/detay/genel-ekipman-etkinligi-oee-f5202/llms.txt)) is a performance indicator that quantitatively evaluates the efficiency of equipment in production processes. OEE identifies losses and highlights areas for improvement by combining the equipment's availability, performance, and quality rates. Developed as part of the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) philosophy, this metric is widely used to enhance the effectiveness of manufacturing operations.

### **Components and Calculation of OEE**

OEE consists of three main components: availability, performance, and quality.

**Availability: **Availability represents the ratio of the actual operating time to the planned production time of the equipment. It is calculated by dividing the actual operating time (planned production time minus downtime) by the planned production time.

**Performance: **Performance indicates the ratio of the actual production speed to the theoretical maximum speed. It is calculated by multiplying the ideal cycle time by the number of produced parts and dividing the result by the actual operating time.

**Quality: **Quality reflects the ratio of defect-free products to the total number of produced parts. It is calculated by dividing the number of good products by the total number of produced parts.

OEE is obtained by multiplying these three components:

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

This calculation expresses the overall effectiveness of the equipment as a percentage and is used to identify efficiency losses in production processes.

### **Applications and Importance of OEE**

OEE is widely used in the manufacturing sector to evaluate and improve equipment efficiency. This metric is utilized to identify losses in production processes, develop [maintenance strategies](/en/detay/industrial-maintenance-planning-d85f5/llms.txt), and guide [continuous improvement](/en/detay/what-is-kaizen-53995/llms.txt) activities.

**Monitoring of Production Processes: **OEE is used to monitor the performance of equipment on the [production line](/en/detay/production-line-optimization-d00cf/llms.txt) and to identify efficiency losses.

**Development of Maintenance Strategies: **OEE data is used to assess the effectiveness of maintenance activities and to optimize maintenance strategies.

**Continuous Improvement: **OEE serves as a tool to identify areas for improvement in production processes and to guide continuous improvement initiatives.

The importance of OEE lies in its ability to quantitatively express efficiency losses in production processes and to guide improvement efforts. This metric is a critical tool for increasing the effectiveness of manufacturing systems and gaining a competitive advantage.

### **Limitations and Areas for Improvement of OEE**

OEE is an effective tool for identifying efficiency losses in production processes; however, it has certain limitations. If the data required for OEE calculations is not collected accurately and in a timely manner, the results may be misleading. Disruptions in data collection processes affect the reliability of the analysis.

Moreover, OEE focuses solely on equipment efficiency and does not take the human factor into account. Therefore, operator performance, labor-related deviations, and human-based improvement potentials are excluded from OEE calculations. In complex manufacturing systems, it is not possible to measure all efficiency losses using OEE alone.
