It was first organized in 1979 by French motorcyclist Thierry Sabine. The original route stretched from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal, which is why it was long known as the “Paris-[Dakar Rally](/en/detay/dakar-rally-2026-6da51/llms.txt).” The race takes place over extremely harsh terrains such as deserts, mountains, rocky roads, and sand dunes.
