The [Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan Border Agreement](/en/detay/kirgizistan-tacikistan-sinir-anlasmasi/llms.txt) was signed on [March](/en/detay/march/llms.txt) 13, 2025, in Bishkek, the capital of [Kyrgyzstan](/en/detay/kyrgyzstan-kyrgyz-republic-90a77/llms.txt), marking the resolution of a long-standing border dispute between the two countries. The agreement was signed by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.

### **Background**

Border disputes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan emerged following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as the two nations struggled to define their 970-kilometer shared border. Over the years, numerous skirmishes and violent confrontations occurred, particularly around the Batken region.

The most severe clashes occurred in 2021 and 2022:

- In 2021, three days of conflict resulted in the deaths of 36 Kyrgyz and 19 Tajik citizens.
- In September 2022, a six-day battle led to nearly 100 deaths and the evacuation of over 140,000 people.

### **Signing and Scope of the Agreement**

After more than 20 years of negotiations, the agreement was signed [at](/en/detay/at-3/llms.txt) the Cohesion Center in Bishkek during [an](/en/detay/an-2/llms.txt) official visit by Tajik President Rahmon​.

The agreement includes the following key points:

- Demarcation and delineation of the border, resolving disputes over contested areas.
- Reopening of transport links, including the Kyzyl-Bel and Kairagach checkpoints, which were reinstated through a video conference ceremony.
- Strengthening of economic and trade relations, with both sides agreeing to resume air, road, and rail transportation​.

### **Significance of the Agreement**

The agreement is considered a historic step towards regional stability and security in Central Asia. President Japarov declared that the borders would now serve as a “permanent border of friendship”, while President Rahmon emphasized that the deal would “elevate bilateral relations to a new level”.
