The term coaster has been adopted into Turkish from English, where it means "a small cargo vessel traveling along the coast". This term is derived from the English word coast, which carries both the meanings of "coast" and "to go along the coast", with the suffix +er added to it. The word's origin traces back to Old French coste, meaning "rib", "side of the body", and "edge, coast". This French structure evolved from the Latin costa, meaning "rib" or "side of the body", and has been passed down to the present day.
