## Article Content

The Istanbul Half Marathon is an international road race held in Istanbul, Türkiye. The event covers the standard half marathon distance of 21.0975 kilometers. The race is organized by Spor Istanbul, a subsidiary of the [Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality](/en/detay/istanbul-il-2/llms.txt). It was first held in 1987, experienced interruptions over the years, and has been organized regularly since 2014. As of 2025, it is being held for the 20th time.

### **History**

The Istanbul Half Marathon was first organized in 1987 by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. However, the race was suspended during various periods, specifically between 1994–2009 and 2011–2013. Since 2014, it has been consistently organized by Spor Istanbul.

In 2017, the event was elevated to the **"Gold Label Road Race"** status by **World Athletics** (formerly known as IAAF), certifying its adherence to international organizational standards. Over the years, the event has expanded from catering mainly to elite athletes to becoming a mass-participation event featuring a public run format. The number of participants has consistently increased, with over 10,000 runners competing in 2024.

A major milestone was achieved in 2021 when Kenyan athlete **Ruth Chepngetich** set the women's half marathon world record with a time of **1:04:01** at the event. Since then, charity runs and youth participation initiatives have also strengthened the event’s social impact dimension.
