Gıyap

Gıyap has entered Turkish from the Arabic word ġiyāb (غياب), which is derived from the verb ġāba (غاب) meaning “to cease to exist” or “to not be present.” The term conveys the meaning of “non-presence” or “absence.”

• Law: Used to refer to trials or decisions made in the absence of a person.
• Official Language: Used to indicate the absence of a relevant person in meetings decisions or procedures.
• Everyday Language: Used to denote that a person is not present at a location or did not participate in an event.
• Literature: Preferred in texts to describe absence non-presence or events occurring in someone’s absence.
